The City of Phoenix Pilot Composting Project is a remarkable example of how an integrated design team came together to complete a unique and challenging project from concept to implementation in just three short months. The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee partnered with the City of Phoenix Public Works department for collection and disposal of the sold waste generated from five days of events at Verizon Super Bowl Central celebration in downtown Phoenix. With this the “kick the Waste Initiative” was created with a goal to divert 80% of the celebrations solid waste away from the landfill for beneficial use. Three weeks of beta test helped work out the bugs in the system so we were ready for the prime time of Super Bowl week. The pilot will continue to operate for about 15 months while the permanent, large-scale facility is under construction.
